What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a UK government scheme that allows registered charities to reclaim 25p for every £1 donated by a UK taxpayer. This means a £100 donation becomes £125 at no extra cost to the donor.

How Gift Aid works

When a UK taxpayer makes a donation and declares they're eligible for Gift Aid, the charity can claim back the basic rate tax (20%) from HMRC. The donor simply ticks a box confirming they're a UK taxpayer.

Eligibility requirements

  • The donor must be a UK taxpayer
  • They must have paid enough income tax or capital gains tax to cover the Gift Aid amount
  • The charity must be registered with HMRC for Gift Aid
  • A valid Gift Aid declaration must be collected
